A variety of airlines offer one stop flights (usually via Bogota or Panama City) to Cartagena throughout the week. The major carriers in Colombia are Avianca and Latam, they both offer international and domestic flights.

Low-cost carriers include Wingo and VivaColombia. These airlines operate pretty much like Spirit Air/Jet Blue/Allegiant Air in the US or Easy-Jet/Vueling/Jet Blue in Europe. They do offer significantly cheaper seats than Avianca/Latam for domestic flights.

Transportation in Cartagena

To/From Airport

- Taxis
There is a “taxi stand” that gives you an approximation of your fare according to your destination. However, it is advisable to agree on the price with the driver before you get into the taxi; often they take advantage of tourists and ask for more money.

Sometimes they accept dollars so make sure you have the approximate equivalent. Having a $5 dollar bill and $5 worth in singles will get you to your hotel. If the driver is nice, feel free to tip $1-$2.

Otherwise you may also exchange a little bit of money at the airport. We recommend that you just exchange enough for the cab ride. You don't want to exchange too much as airports offer the worst exchange rates. When you go to your hotel, ask the concierge where is the best place to go to exchange money. We have learned that banks or withdrawing from an ATM usually gets you the best rates.

Here are the rates to and from Rafael Núñez Airport:

Airport to/from Old City (10 minutes) - $13,000-$16,000 COP (Approx. $4-$5 USD)
Airport to/from Bocagrande (15 minutes) - $20,000-$25,000 COP (Approx. $7-$9 USD)
